On Sunday, 13th of January 2019, ELES and Terna carried out the setting up of the power supply from Slovenia to Italy according to the »top down« approach, which means setting up the operation with the help of the power supply coming from a neighboring system. After setting up the baseline condition of the 400 kV grid in Slovenia and Italy, we activated approximately 200 km of the mostly Italian 400vK grid during the first step in the RTP Divača. This was followed by activating the remaining segments of the 400vK grid within the Italian system in an overall length of 1139 km. 22 RTP’s in Italy were partially powered from Slovenia, to ensure the suitable voltage level, compensation devices with an overall reactive power above 1000 MVar were engaged.

Experts from ELES and Terna prepared the setting up of the operation that was carried out on Sunday. They studied the numerous possible scenarios of how the test could go, where a lot of attention had to be given to the prevention of possible negative effects of the test for grid users. The test was entirely successful and confirmed the appropriateness of existing procedures for establishing a system after a collapse, which we developed and wrote in cooperation with neighboring system operators. While preparing and executing the test we also gained new experiences and knowledge that we will take into consideration when preparing updated approaches. This means that we will be even better prepared for possibly setting up a system after a collapse.
